Sometime it seems to be human nature to make things more complicated than they need to be, and this certainly seems to be the case with many of the businesses I see. Effective marketing doesn't have to be complicated or difficult. Here are some things you can do to make your marketing run more smoothly.

Some of these things might seem like common sense to you, but there are a surprising number of people I come across who seem to make even the simplest marketing task more complicated than it needs to be.
If you are considering implementing marketing in your business, the following five keys will help you to focus and simplify the whole process for you...

1) Be clear with your Goals - Clarify exactly what it is you want to achieve...

To get the end result you want, you need to be clear what you want to achieve - before you start - so you need to have an objective.

You may just want to generate more leads, or get more people along to your seminar. Maybe you want to increase the number of referrals you receive or sell more of your products.
You should also consider which of these methods - your website, e-mails, print adverts, articles, direct mail, newsletter etc. - you are going to use to target your ideal prospects.

2) How are you going to implement your goals?

Once you have defined what you want to achieve, you need to set about implementing it. Something my father told me when I was a child (and I feel sure most of you will have heard this) is that the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time...

So it is with implementing your marketing. Break it down into smaller and smaller parts and then work through and complete each individual step. One phrase which may help you is - "and I do that by..."

3) Only implement one thing at a time.

Trying to implement more than one thing at a time is a big mistake, but a common one businesses make. One of my clients tried to implement 5 at the same time - with disastrous results.
Nothing got implemented correctly, lots of mistakes were made and a great deal of time and money was wasted.
If you want hassle free implementation, my advice would be to focus on one thing at a time and make sure you implement it well, before moving on to the next thing.

4) Be clear on the strategy you intend to use.

For instance if you want to implement a referral strategy, make sure you understand exactly how referrals work, how to get people to make them, what can prevent people from making them etc. This may involve you doing research or working with someone who has the right experience.

5) Test, test and test again.

Probably the biggest (but simplest) thing you can do to improve your marketing is to test everything you try.
Each time you want to move forward with your marketing strategy, referring back to these points will make the whole process less daunting than you first thought.
