Ballooon Idea Questions - 2007/03/28 07:35 I need to use a three foot balloon hanging from the center of the dance floor using fabric and lighting. the fabric will be swagging from the center to the four corner poles. How can i keep this weight up without any risk of it falling?

I thought of using magnets but I'm not sure if this would be a safety issue because of the lights.

Which lighting would be safe and best to use, rope or xmas lighting?

Magnets will be my first choice, make sure you use the larger ones that holds 10 pounds.
If you are worried about it falling this is what you should do...
Use twinkle xmas lights,
Cut your 4 pieces of fabric; while on the floor attach a magnet at the end of each piece of fabric

Attach the string of lights to the magnet in the fabric. Then put it in the mag mover pole and attach each piece one by one to the ceiling. after all 4 are up place the 3' balloon in the center with a magnet,

I hold up my fabric canopies with only 2 magnets and never had any problem, but you should use 4 until you feel comfortable with it. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Hope this helps

Re:Ballooon Idea Questions - 2007/04/02 15:27 I agree with Carmen, magnets rule for this application. The twinkle lights are definately what you want to use, they are lighter and it is a better effect. Good luck with your event.

Re:Great Idea - 2007/04/03 00:54 OK, so here is a great idea, Internship!
Evelyn is interested in learning specific things that I do; she offered to help me in a job to get hands on experience. Right away I thought, this is a great idea, I get free help and she learns all at the same time.

Do you remember your first big job? Were you scared? I was petrified! I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know how long it would take me, and I had no experience in creative ways of fixing problems at a job site. I would of liked having an opportunity like this 11 years ago.

I think we should start offering the opportunity to newbie’s to help us in big jobs. This can be a great way for them to learn the basics but also learn what they don’t learn in conventions, the bad side of the job and what comes with it, the stress, the responsibility, the timing, and the creative ways of fixing problems on a jobsite.

This may cost some money to the person that wants to learn, but it will be money well spent. They can claim these expenses under education.

I’m a strong believer that if you want to be really good in this industry you need to go to conventions and get involved in events that offer hands on projects like balloon-a-Palooza, Balloon Manor and Balloon Town. Now I will add to that list internships. Even if is a one-day thing.

Maybe this is not for everyone, You might not be willing to do this for others because you are too busy and you need to do the jobs quickly and don't want to stop to answer questions or explain what you are doing. But look at it a different away, you will have a helper for the day and you don't need to pay him/her.

Well this is my personal opinion; I think it’s worth the try. In my case I always need extra hands in my jobs and if they need the experience, then it will work just find.

What do you think?

Re:Great Idea - 2007/04/05 07:19 I love the idea of internships and would be a willing protege! I have mentors in other areas of my personal and professional life (lives?) and have learned immensely this way.
